About the Trainer

Staten Island Companion Dog Training Club (SICDTC) is a nonprofit, AKC-sanctioned dog training club established in 1947 and run by over 100 volunteer members. They offer group training classes for all skill levels—from Puppy Kindergarten and basic manners to advanced Competition Obedience, Agility, Rally, Scent Work, Tricks, and Therapy Dog Preparation. All breeds and mixed breeds are welcome, and membership is not required to enroll. Their instructors are highly experienced, with many holding multiple AKC titles including OTCH, UDX, and TD, and have decades of combined training experience. The club provides a dedicated training hall and agility field, and visitors are welcome to observe classes. They offer a 10% discount for shelter-adopted dogs and certify dogs for Canine Good Citizen and Tricks titles. Their Therapy Dog Training program is invitation-only and requires prerequisite obedience skills, preparing dogs and handlers for visits to hospitals, nursing homes, and other facilities.

SICDTC emphasizes building a strong human-dog bond through positive, reward-based methods and encourages lifelong learning. They host AKC trials, seminars, workshops, and community events like AKC Meet the Breeds, and maintain an active online presence with regular updates on Facebook and Instagram.

The club also offers ring rentals for private practice and maintains a member-brags section showcasing competition successes, including a 3rd place win at the 2025 Westminster Agility Championship.

Accomplishments

Instructors have earned multiple AKC titles including OTCH, UDX, and OGM. One instructor’s dog earned 3rd place at the 2025 Westminster Agility Championship. Another instructor’s dog was ranked #1 German Shepherd in U.S. obedience in 2015. Instructors have competed at the National Obedience Championship and Westminster multiple times. The club has been operating since 1947 and is AKC-sanctioned.
