Testimonials
David was amazing with my dog Gunner. In just a few days he got him not barking in the kennel. I had Gunner with David for a month and he took care of everything. David even administered meds for me while Gunner was in his care. I’m so impressed with the professionalism and experience David has. I will not utilize any other trainer going forward. He’s reasonably priced and worth every penny.
-Timothy Martinez
We have had both our Pudelpointers spend time with David. Both experiences were great. He built a solid versatile gundog base with our 1 year old pup Reacher and most recently worked with Mackey, our 4 year old, who had become self employed in the field. In both cases dealing with completely different dog personalities David always put the dog first and treated them as his own. I would not hesitate entrusting David with one of our dogs in the future.
-James Daniel
I was very impressed with David and so was my field cocker Gunnar! I’ll definitely use them again. Very knowledgeable and a super nice young man!

About the Trainer
Stenkil Gundogs is a professional dog training business based in southeastern Idaho, just 30 minutes from Idaho Falls and under 2 hours from Jackson Hole, with seasonal operations in Central Oregon. Founded in 2023 by David Johansson, the business specializes in positive, reward-based training for both gundogs and everyday companion dogs of all ages and breeds. David brings over a decade of hands-on experience, including six years as Kennel Manager at Blixt & Co., the only true driven pheasant and partridge shoot in the U.S., and training under British field trial traditions. Training programs are tailored individually, with a focus on building confidence, reliability in the field, and calm behavior at home. Services include month-to-month training programs, private hourly owner lessons, workshops for obedience and gundog development, and limited boarding with indoor/outdoor kennels, camera surveillance, and medication administration. The facility is situated near 45,000 acres of BLM land, allowing real-world training scenarios. David emphasizes early training starting at 8 weeks, adapting methods to each dog’s personality, and fostering a strong owner-dog bond through understanding body language and behavior.
Stenkil Gundogs also sells professionally trained gundogs aged 10–16 months and 16–24 months, carefully selected from vetted breeders and their own breeding program. These dogs are trained in upland, waterfowl, and driven shooting, with strong house manners and obedience to voice, whistle, and hand signals. The business maintains an active presence on social media and offers video updates to clients during boarding and training.
David’s background includes Swedish hunting heritage, working with British-bred labs and spaniels, and guiding at Highland Hills Ranch, Orvis Wingshooting Lodge of the Year 2024. His approach is rooted in positive reinforcement, adaptability, and treating each dog as an individual.
Boarding services include daily, weekly, and monthly stays with climate-controlled facilities and 24/7 monitoring. Workshops provide group learning opportunities and exposure to diverse dogs and environments. Owner lessons focus on building skills and understanding canine behavior.
All training begins with a mandatory consultation to assess the dog’s needs and set goals.
