Sunshine K9s offers K9 Nose Work/Scent Work classes structured into sessions. Session 1, “Intro to Nose Work,” is held indoors and introduces dogs to scenting using their preferred motivator, teaching them to search boxes with varying objects and heights. “Nose Work Foundations” (Sessions 2-4) continues to improve searching skills, introduces the target odor Birch, and incorporates outdoor and vehicle searches. “Intermediate Nose Work” (Sessions 5-7) focuses on developing handler skills, increasing search difficulty, and teaching dogs to find additional target odors used in popular competitions.

Advanced drop-in classes are available for trial preparation, skill refinement, or continued fun, requiring completion of Sessions 1-7 or instructor approval. These classes offer options for regular or occasional attendance. Classes are limited to 6-7 dog/handler teams, with dogs worked individually and crated when not actively searching. The facility is heated and air-conditioned, and lessons are held both indoors and outdoors, weather permitting.

Testimonials

“I cannot say enough about Rosana as a teacher and coach, she is very knowledgeable and intuitive in knowing what each dog needs to be successful in the wonderful sport of Nose Work. I started with Rosana in January of 2019, with a crazy German shepherd pup, that needed a job! Well, Rosana has helped me create a nose work machine! Groot has now earned his NW3 and we are still reaching for the stars! Since that time, we have been working and training with two other dogs that now have earned an NW1 and one will hopefully soon earn her NW2. These dogs have also competed in PSD and now Rosana’s new sport with KSG. Rosana is an extremely talented teacher, and I am proud to work with her on a regular basis.”
– Angie Young, (Groot, Kali, Pippa)

“You may have to wait to get into a class that fits your schedule, but I promise you it’s worth the wait! I came across Rosana’s company by friends that HIGHLY recommended her! And, I can see why! She is thorough, attentive, and encouraging. She truly cares and works with you and your dog’s specific characteristics to set you and your dog up for success. My dog has an auto immune disease, and she’s unable to compete in high impact sports. Being an Australian Shepherd, she was bred to work and needed a job desperately. Nose work and Rosana’s class and guidance gave me my team mate back. Each time she sniffs out a hide, I could cry with gratitude for being able to compete with my girl again. Nose work is mentally stimulating, physically doable, and completely worth it. If you’re considering Rosana and her training, you won’t regret it!”
– Sophie’s Mom

“Sunshine K9s and Rosana Dropkin are amazing! I was looking for a low-impact, highly stimulating sport for my Bulldog, and found nose work to be just the sport. Rosana’s methodology has laid the groundwork for proven success. My girl loves going to class, trials and just LOVES to search! I am so thankful for this sport, Sunshine K9s and Rosana!”
– Tildy’s Mom

About the Trainer

Sunshine K9s is a dog training business dedicated to helping dogs, with a primary focus on Nose Work/Scent Work. Head trainer Rosana Dropkin concentrates her talents on this sport to provide the best possible training. The business aims to show dogs a new life beyond just training.

Nose Work is described as a highly fun and challenging game, developed for pet dogs and based on professional detection dog training. It is suitable for all dogs, including high-drive dogs needing mental exercise and newly adopted dogs that can benefit from increased confidence.

The training builds confidence in dogs, provides an outlet for their excess physical and mental energy, allows participation in an exciting activity that is not too physically demanding for the human, and engages senior or physically challenged dogs. It also deepens the bond between dog and handler. Sunshine K9s also hosts K9 Scent Games trials, a new sanctioning organization for scent work competitions, offering various levels and search elements.
