Dog Training Methodology

The Scentsable K9 offers a progressive scent detection training program. It begins with “Imprinting and Intro to Detection,” where dogs learn to recognize target odors (Birch, Anise, Clove) and handlers are introduced to basic leash handling and reading dog behavior. This foundational stage also includes “proofing” off distractions.

Following this, “Basic Scent Detection” focuses on searching for target odors, improving leash handling skills (on and off lead), and learning basic deployment techniques. “Intermediate Scent Detection” increases the challenge with longer searches, multiple target odors, and distractions to build confidence and independence. “Advanced Classes” prepare K9 teams for real-life deployments, featuring longer searches with multiple hides and controlled negatives, mimicking professional handler scenarios. Private classes are available for individualized problem-solving or more advanced training, allowing handlers to work multiple dogs in one session.

Beyond classes, they host “Seminars,” which are typically 1 or 2-day, 8-hour events with multiple instructors, covering elements like vehicles, exteriors, interiors, or containers for 24 to 30 working teams. “Workshops” are shorter, around 4-hour sessions with one instructor, designed to refine specific training areas.

Pricing & Policies

Pricing Summary

Group classes are $25 per K9 team for a 1-hour session, with a maximum of 4 dogs in attendance. Private 1-hour classes are $100, allowing handlers to run as many dogs as they like during that time. All classes operate on a “pay as you go” basis, meaning there is no need to purchase a block of classes.

Policies

All classes are “pay as you go,” meaning clients are not required to purchase a block of classes. If a client is unable to attend a training session, they should notify Pete so he can free up their normal time slot.

About the Trainer

The Scentsable K9 specializes in professional scentwork training for K9 teams, offering a comprehensive program that includes classes, seminars, and workshops. Their approach emphasizes a “Fluid Plan,” challenging scenarios, and building confidence in both the dog and handler.

Training covers various elements such as vehicles, exteriors, interiors, and containers, with a strong focus on practical skills like time pressure, odor imprinting, managing odor amount, leash handling, hide placement, foundation reinforcement, environmental barriers, and distractors. They train dogs to recognize specific target odors like Birch, Anise, and Clove, and also guide handlers on how a dog’s nose works, recognizing changes in behavior when a dog detects an odor, and basic leash handling skills.

The business offers a structured progression from introductory to advanced levels, along with private sessions for personalized problem-solving or advanced training. Seminars provide intensive, multi-instructor training over 1-2 days, while workshops offer shorter, focused sessions to refine specific skills.
