Dog Training Methodology

Methods:

  • Positive Reinforcement Only

Uplifting Paws offers Group Obedience Classes with a curriculum designed to prepare future therapy teams, keeping class sizes small for individualized attention. These classes run once a week for six weeks, with entry-level classes not requiring dogs on the first night.

Day Training combines an hour of professional training with a day of play at their facility, allowing clients to choose a training path while the trainers handle the work. Private Lessons provide one-on-one training, either in the client’s home or at the facility, customized to each dog’s unique needs. These are ideal for clients seeking a quieter environment, individualized attention, or addressing behavior issues before joining group classes.

Their core focus is on Service Dogs, with a program dedicated to training dogs to assist individuals with physical or psychiatric disabilities, including autism. They also assist clients in training their own service dogs, starting with foundational group classes. For Therapy Teams, Uplifting Paws offers training for volunteers to take their dogs into the community to provide comfort and support. Therapy dogs must pass the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC), Community Canine (CGCA), and Canine Urban (CGCU) tests, with retesting required every two years for CGCU. Specific classes include Puppy Manners (8-18 weeks), Impulse Control (4 months+), Adult Basics (6 months+), Intermediate Adult, Pre-Therapy, and Therapy (final certification). Mini sessions cover Advanced Puppy, Loose Leash Walking, and Tricks Class, alongside seminars like Manners & Managing the Holidays and Holiday Enrichment.
